Grantmaking Philosophy
LDRF insists on philanthropy rather than charity. Thus, the Foundation’s grantmaking strategy focuses on equipping people and communities with the necessary tools to understand, organize, advocate and lead, in order to achieve betterment and realize communities of opportunity. LDRF is purposeful about reaching out to diverse groups and their leaders to solicit proposals that embody the LDRF mission and address the real needs of residents. The Foundation seeks to maximize the impact of its grantmaking by addressing immediate needs while increasingly looking to the future, identifying underlying causes of suffering and inequity, addressing complex issues with multi-pronged strategies, and investing in efforts to transform organizational and ideological structures that repeatedly present barriers to progress. LDRF’s grantmaking strategy necessarily embraces calculated risk: in order to revitalize hurricane-affected areas, the Foundation must be willing to invest in those that for-profit and public entities habitually overlook; we then take responsibility for managing that risk, carefully stewarding our investment through intimate involvement with our grantees and their work, providing the ongoing support they need to build a better Louisiana for all.
